Blue Ridge Expedition Program
The first
few days of each expedition will be spent at the Reasonover Base Camp on the Green River Preserve.
Each expedition group along with GRP staff members will explore the surrounding mountains and learn
to be at home in the wilderness. Experiences at the Reasonover base camp will include day hikes, primitive camping
and cooking, wildlife observation, orienteering, woodcraft and fire skills. Campers discover and
cherish the tranquility of sleeping out under the stars and they learn to recognize the best things in life.
Expeditioners
plan, with the guidance of the GRP staff, their own backpacking and canoeing adventure. Destinations
will include some of the most spectacular waterfalls, rivers and forest in the Appalachian Mountains.
In the past, expeditioners have climbed to peaks over 6,200 feet above sea level on the Art Loeb Trail.
They watched the sun set and the full moon rise from Devil’s Courthouse while Peregrine falcons
taught their fledglings to fly. They explored the magnificent Panthertown, the “Yosemite of the
East.” They learned the art of “aquatic theology,” better known to all as fly fishing.
Each expedition
features several days of canoeing on area lakes and rivers such as the lower Green River, the French
Broad River, and Lake Jocassee. Blue Ridge Expeditions conclude by returning to the Reasonover base
camp for a sweat lodge, solo reflections and a closing ceremony.
